Livraria Lello

A practical guide to Livraria Lello in Porto: how the voucher entry works, what time to go to avoid the crowds, how much time to give it and the truth about Harry Potter.

Our verdict

Worth it at 9:00 and as a 20-minute monument, not as a bookstore to browse. By mid-morning it turns into a shoulder-to-shoulder line.

Livraria Lello's red staircase under the stained glass

Livraria Lello opened in 1906 on Rua das Carmelitas and is one of the oldest bookstores in Portugal still in business. Its two-armed red staircase under a large stained-glass window has made it one of the most photographed interiors in the world. Today it works as a monument with tickets and set hours, and as a bookstore too.

Our experience

At first we had it on the day we arrived from Lisbon, but we moved it to the next day: a timed entry on the same day as a train trip seemed too risky to us. We booked the 9:00 slot on Friday, May 15, on the official website, because a weekday at opening is when it’s least crowded.

That day we had breakfast at Padaria Ribeiro, which is on the way, walked up and gave it 20 minutes. We left our big backpacks at the apartment, because they don’t let them in. From there we headed down to the Mercado do Bolhão.

A bit of history

The story starts before the building. In 1881 José Pinto de Sousa Lello opened his own bookstore, and in 1894 he bought the stock of the Livraria Internacional of the Frenchman Ernesto Chardron, the most prestigious bookstore in Porto. With his brother António he founded Lello & Irmão.

In 1906 they commissioned the new shop from the engineer Francisco Xavier Esteves. Outside it’s neo-Gothic; inside it mixes Art Nouveau and neo-Manueline details. The staircase has a reinforced concrete core, an experimental material in Portugal at the time, covered in carved wood. The stained glass was signed in 1906 by the Dutchman Samuel Van Krieken.

For almost a century it was simply the best bookstore in the city. In 2010 Lonely Planet put it among the three most beautiful in the world, the Harry Potter myth did the rest, and in 2015 they started charging admission to control the crowds.

How it fits into your day

Lello is a step away from Clérigos and ten minutes from the Bolhão. That’s how we fit it into our second day in Porto.

What to see, in order

  1. The facade

Before you go in, cross the street and look up: the two figures above the door are Art and Science.

  2. The entrance floor

A wooden medallion with the Lello family monogram. Almost nobody sees it because everyone is looking up.

  3. The staircase from below

Stand at the foot of it, in the center, and look up: the two arms of the red staircase frame the stained glass. It's the photo of the bookstore.

  4. The cart on rails

At the foot of the staircase there's a rail in the floor and a wooden cart they used to move books between floors. It still rolls.

  5. The stained glass

Look for the motto DECUS IN LABORE ("dignity in work") and the initials of the Lello brothers. With the morning sun it casts colors onto the staircase.

  6. The upstairs ceiling

Go up and look at the gallery ceiling: it looks like carved walnut, but it's painted plaster. You can see the seams at the edges.

Tips we wish we’d known

Tips

  • Arrive ten minutes before your slot and walk straight to the staircase, before the rest of the group comes in.
  • Buy a book: the voucher is fully deducted and your entry ends up free. A paperback Pessoa runs about €10–12.
  • Leave suitcases and large backpacks where you're staying. There are free lockers at the entrance, but they won't let you in with bulky bags.
  • The bookstore has a free audio guide in its app, using the store's wifi. Don't pay for another one.

Do

  • Buy only on the official website or at the official ticket office, two doors down.
  • Take the staircase photo in the first few minutes, before it fills up.
  • Use the restroom beforehand: there are none inside for visitors.

Don’t

  • Don't pay for a Silver voucher on third-party websites to "skip the line": only Gold and Platinum have priority entry.
  • Don't book Harry Potter tours that sell Lello as the inspiration for Hogwarts: J.K. Rowling said she never went in.
  • Don't go mid-morning expecting to browse books in peace.
